In a couple of our sessions, we discussed how artists use ‘ Transcription’ as a means to understand the process of paintings and develop their own ideas by reinterpreting a picture by another artist.

We looked at a couple of examples of important artists who have done this, namely Frank Auerbach (John Constable) and Matisse (Jan Davidsz) I’ve added both sets of paintings for you to consider their different approaches.

I mentioned at our last class that artists use this method to progress their ideas - for example the Picasso Museum in Barcelona contains many drawings and paintings influenced directly by the Valezquez painting Las Meninas. I’ve added both the original and Picasso’s reinvention of it.

I have also added a couple of Van Gogh paintings that were directly transcribed from artists that were a great influence on his work.

Please note : owing to the difficult lighting conditions in the hall and reflections from glass etc, the quality of some of the photographs is unfortunately a bit mixed but hopefully good enough to give you a good enough view of the exhibition.
